RCSD Investigates Shooting

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott stated that at approximately 6:30 PM on Thursday, September 1, 2016, Richland County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to 228 Meredith Square, 29223 in reference to shots fired. The Sheriff stated that deputies located three gunshot victims, a 30-year old male, and his two and four year old daughters on the porch of the residence; EMS transported the victims to Palmetto Health Richland.   

Sheriff Leon Lott stated that investigators continue to piece together, and determine how this tragic incident occurred at the residence. The Sheriff stated that preliminary information revealed that as the father was attempting to make the weapon safe, he accidently discharged it striking him in the hand, and both of his daughters in the upper body. The Sheriff added that the father and his four year old daughter suffered non-life threatening injuries; Richland County Coroner Gary Watts stated that two year old Heaven Miller died from complications of a gunshot wound to the upper body.  

Sheriff Leon Lott stated that Richland County Sheriff’s Department investigators are currently in the preliminary stages of this investigation, it appears to be accidental at this point.
