RCSD arrests Johnson for child abuse

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced the arrest of Krystal Johnson (DOB: 02/05/1989) charged with great bodily injury to a child.

Sheriff Leon Lott stated that Johnson turned herself in to Richland County Sheriff’s Department investigators on Friday, September 30, 2016 at 201 John Mark Dial Road (Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, 29201.

The Sheriff stated that on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 Richland County Sheriff’s Department investigators responded to 2435 Forest Drive (Providence Hospital), 29204 in reference to abuse to a two-month old female child. The Sheriff added that the incident occurred on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at Johnson’s residence located at 1949 Haviland Circle, 29210. The victim’s mother stated that the baby was in Johnson’s care as a babysitter when the injury occurred.

Richland County Sheriff’s Department investigators were able to determine that Johnson physically abused the baby because she wouldn’t stop crying. Johnson placed the baby in a car seat began shaking her viciously while in the seat; Johnson then removed the infant and shook her violently while holding the baby in her hands. The mother noticed the bruises on her child’s face and took her to the hospital, where doctors stated that the baby suffered multiple contusions and a severe brain injury.

The Sheriff stated that our first priority is to help those who have been abused and to protect those who may be vulnerable to future abuse. The Sheriff reminds us that there is help when warning signs appear and urges you to reach out for assistance during these times; Children’s Trust of South Carolina works to prevent child abuse, neglect, and injuries whether through intent or unintentional. The Sheriff asks that you seek help before it goes beyond assistance; progress has been made to improve the quality of life for children, but there’s still work to be done in order to protect our children. We must shield these little ones from the emotional, sexual, neglect, and physical abuse that those with sick minds inflict upon them. If you see, hear, or know of any child who may be enduring such pain and suffering please contact the Richland County Sheriff’s Department at 803-576-3102 or call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CrimeSC.

The Sheriff stated that Johnson has been transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
