Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced the arrests of Michael Carter (DOB: 11/12/1986) charged with three counts of trafficking in persons and two counts of criminal sexual conduct; and Shalil Alford (DOB: 10/24/1991) charged with one count of trafficking in persons. The Sheriff stated that Carter turned himself in to Richland County Sheriff’s Department investigators on Thursday, November 17, 2016; Alford later turned herself in to investigators on Wednesday, November 23, 2016.
The Sheriff stated that Richland County investigators were notified on Monday, November 14, 2016 about a sex trafficking incident that took place at 1144 Bush River Road (Days Inn), 29210, during the weekend of November 11 – 13th, 2016. The Sheriff stated that investigators discovered that Carter and Alford forced the victims to perform sexual acts with men for money; the four victims ranged from 15-17 years of age. The Sheriff stated that Carter and Alford convinced the victims to meet them at the Days Inn via Facebook.
Sheriff Leon Lott stated that human trafficking is happening right here in Richland County, and that these victims are being sold and taken advantage of; the victims in this incident were treated at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. The Sheriff stated that we will continue to go after those who are actively involved in human trafficking.
