Suspects in stolen vehicle wreck on interstate

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott stated that an alert deputy stopped thieves from stealing items from Lowe’s Home Improvement store, 7441 Two Notch Road. The incident occurred just before noon when a deputy was flagged down by employees; two suspects were inside the store attempting to steal items.

The deputy approached the two suspects who ditched the items as they entered a waiting truck, with a third suspect behind the wheel. As the deputy attempted to identify the suspects they took off at a high rate of speed driving recklessly out of the parking lot. The deputy used blue lights and sirens in an attempt to get the driver to pull over. The chase ended on I-20 westbound, where the driver intentionally tried to drive through the fence on the interstate just before the Monticello exit.

The Sheriff stated that two male suspects have been transported to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital; one with condition unknown, and the other for observation. A third suspect, a female was transported to RCSD Headquarters. It was further discovered that the truck the suspects were driving was stolen out of Berkley County; the truck had additional stolen items inside it from other locations.

This incident is ongoing and additional information will be made available as soon as possible.
