Student Charged after Hoax

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced the arrest of a 14-year old student charged with disturbing schools and hoax device or destructive device.

On Friday, March 9, 2018 at 1601 Clarkson Road (Hopkins Middle School) RCSD School Resource Officer was contacted by school administrators about a male student who had a plastic bottle which he represented as a bomb (image attached); the bottle contained an unknown yellow liquid substance. While in the classroom, the student said the bottle was a bomb and threw it across the classroom; in addition, the student stated that he was going to throw the bottle in the hallway during class transitions.

Sheriff Leon Lott stated that this incident did not lead to an evacuation, but that the quick and swift actions of school administrators and the School Resource Officer may have prevented a chaotic situation. The school districts and the Richland County Sheriff's Department both adhere to a zero tolerance policy for anyone who seeks to commit harmful acts or threats on school grounds. The student has been released to the custody of his parents pending a Family Court hearing.
