Richland County Sheriff’s Department Senior Deputy Receives Prestigious Award

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott is proud to announce that the American Legion Department of South Carolina has honored Richland County Sheriff’s Department Senior Deputy Selena Williams with the 2017 Award for Bravery!

Sheriff Leon Lott stated that on June 2, 2017 the American Legion Department of SC held their annual awards luncheon at the Columbia Marriot located at 1200 Hampton Street, Columbia, SC. In the presence of peers and family members, Selena was honored for her courage, commitment and professionalism. The Sheriff stated that each deputy puts the uniform on everyday not knowing what they will face during their tour of duty.

On May 6, 2016 while traveling on I-20, Selena observed an overturned and smoking vehicle on the right shoulder of the highway. As she approached, someone was screaming that there was a male entrapped in the vehicle. Selena, without hesitation, used her ASP baton to break out the rear window of the vehicle. She then crawled inside with the male to discover that his seatbelt was restricting his ability to move. Selena used her utility blade to cut the seatbelt and free the male. She then broke the passenger side window of the vehicle and pulled the male to safety; undoubtedly saving his life.

Deputies are forced to make decisions that could put them in harm’s way while attempting to save the lives of others; when that happens they have to rely on courage, training and commitment to gain control of the situation and prevent loss of life. Selena displayed such bravery that day and is without a doubt most deserving of this award.
