Sheriff issues request for citizens

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott issued a request to the community to be on the lookout for a man who is attempting to stop citizens by using his headlights.

Sheriff Lott stated that a black male driving a black Dodge Magnum with tinted windows is pulling up behind citizens and flashing his headlights trying to get them to pull over. On three different occasions this has happened to female drivers, who are alone in their cars, but that on all three occasions the suspect has fled when other cars or citizens have approached. The suspect's intentions are not known at this time but:

  • All suspicious activity should be reported immediately.

  • Anyone who questions that they are being pulled over by a police officer:

  • Turn on your flashers

  • should pull to the right

  • slow down

  • make every immediate attempt to pull over

  • pull over at the closest well-lit public location

  • if you have a cell phone call 911 and ask to verify the officer and the stop

  • By law Police officers must have blues lights and sirens installed on their vehicles in order to make a traffic stop. Additionally, police officers must have credentials and a badge that they can produce to identify themselves.

Sheriff Leon Lott stated that all citizens should be constantly aware of their surroundings and citizens should be an extra set of eyes and ears for law enforcement. Citizens can contact the Community Action Team at 576-3118 for more information on how to protect yourself at home, on the road or at work – citizens can go to www.rcsd.net for additional safety tips or to contact the department.
