Sheriff Leon Lott announces "Crossroads Tour" -- a proactive measure and partnership between the Sheriff and Richland County Coroner Gary Watts to put our youth back on track. The "Crossroads Tour” is designed to give our youth a "reality check" by having deputies and deputy coroners meet with the kids and talk with them about their future. Sheriff Lott stated that the kids will also tour the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and visit the morgue and have a Real Talk Session and round table discussions about where their lives are headed – jail or the morgue. The “Crossroads Tour” comes on the heals of the training that School Resource Officers teach (Law Related Education) during the school year about issues that could lead a person to jail and shows them the harsh reality of jail life and where bad decisions can lead them. Sheriff Lott added that the name "Crossroads" was chosen because it seemed most appropriate for those students heading down the wrong path. Meaning that it is up to them to choose which road they follow -- will they proceed on the right side of the law or chose the bad? Parents are urged to take advantage of the opportunity that this tour offers, because it could assist in the decisions our youth make in the future.
Sheriff Leon Lott stated that parents sign their children up for the program, fill out a permission form and each Wednesday and Friday beginning June 4, 2008 students will be escorted and spend the entire day, including lunch with deputies, wrapping the day up around 3:00 P.M. Sheriff Lott stated that the Wednesday tours are specifically for those students who are 11-13 years of age and that the Friday tours are for those students/youth who are 14-18 years of age. Parents can sign up for the program by calling Sgt. Kim Myers at 736-0429 or Deputy Walls 518-4127. Sheriff Lott expressed that it is our duty to educate our youth on the consequences of negative behavior in hopes that they will come to a crossroads and decide to steer away from any future negative behavior.
