RCSD makes arrests of three involved in recent murder

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced the arrests of Sherman Antonio Green Jr. (DOB: 05/29/1986) charged with murder, obstructing justice, and conspiracy to distribute marijuana; Porchia Nicole Green (DOB: 09/20/1991) is charged with conspiracy to distribute marijuana; and Roosevelt Durham Jr. (DOB: 09/26/1988) charged with murder and conspiracy to distribute marijuana. 

Sheriff Leon Lott stated that the Richland County Sheriff’s Department Fugitive Task Force and the United States Marshal’s Office arrested the Green’s (husband and wife) on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 in Rock Hill, South Carolina at a relative’s home. The Sheriff added that Durham Jr. was arrested on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at a residence located on R L Coward Road, Hopkins, 29061. The Sheriff stated that investigators following up on significant leads were able to identify Sherman, Nicole, and Durham Jr. as the suspects involved in a drug transaction and murder. 

The Sheriff stated that around 9:00 PM on Friday, January 20, 2017 at 6533 Camelot Lane, 29203 the Green’s and Durham Jr. met with the victim Benjamin Johnson (DOB: 01/07/1980) to purchase marijuana. During this meeting, an altercation occurred and Johnson was shot in the upper body. Deputies arrived on the scene and found Johnson lying on the ground in front of the residence. EMS responded to the scene and pronounced Johnson dead. Richland County Coroner Gary Watts stated that Johnson died as a result of a single gunshot wound to the upper body. Richland County Sheriff’s Deputy Department Investigators recovered a handgun, drugs, and scales from the crime scene. The Sheriff stated that this was another senseless killing involving drugs. Sheriff Leon Lott credits a concerned community for providing valuable information which led to the apprehension of the suspects involved. The Sheriff added that it was a collaborative effort between Sumter County, Lexington County, City of Columbia Police Departments; this tragedy happens too often and is another sad example of violence ending with the loss of life.         

Sheriff Leon Lott stated that the Green’s and Durham will be transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
