Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced the arrest of Marcus Eugene Shumaker (DOB: 01/08/1998) who will be charged with attempted armed robbery and two counts of kidnapping.
Sheriff Leon Lott stated that Shumaker will be officially charged once he is released from Palmetto Health Richland Hospital (5 Medical Park Drive), 29203. The Sheriff stated that Richland County Sheriff’s Department investigators determined that Shumaker was responsible for an attempted armed robbery.
The Sheriff that at just after 11:00am on Monday, January 2, 2017, Richland County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an armed robbery call at the 100 block of Southport Drive, 29229. Upon arrival deputies located Shumaker outside a vacant home suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. The Sheriff stated that Shumaker was transported to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital where he remains in serious condition. Richland County Sheriff’s Department investigators determined that Shumaker lured the two male victims to the location with the intent to rob them of their cash. The Sheriff stated that Shumaker responded to a Craigslist ad where the victim was looking to purchase a motorcycle; once the victims arrived, Shumaker escorted them to the side of a vacant home and asked to see the money for the motorcycle that’s when Shumaker physically attacked one of the victims and assaulted him. The Sheriff stated that Shumaker pulled out a gun during the scuffle; the victim was able to reach his own handgun and fired multiple shots at Shumaker.
Sheriff Leon Lott stated that that Shumaker was arrested by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department in June of 2014 for robbery. Shumaker remained at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center until he was sent to the South Carolina Department of Corrections at Kirkland and Turbeville. Shumaker was released November 2015 under intensive supervision; in June of 2016 Shumaker was arrested and served three weeks for violation of his conditional release for smoking marijuana and not reporting as scheduled. The Sheriff stated that on December 6, 2016 Shumaker completed the terms of his Youth Offenders Act, and on January 2, 2017 was responsible for committing this armed robbery.
The Sheriff stated that Shumaker will be taken in to custody once released from the hospital.
