RCSD Lieutenant Receives Prestigious Award

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott is proud to announce that the Knights of Columbus has honored Richland County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Albert McLendon. The Sheriff stated that members of the Knights of Columbus presented Lieutenant McLendon with the 2016 Outstanding Officer of the Year Award!

Sheriff Leon Lott stated that on December 21, 2016 the Knights of Columbus held their annual awards dinner at 1620 Marion Street, Columbia, S.C. The Sheriff state that Albert was honored for his courage, commitment and professionalism. The Sheriff stated that each deputy puts the uniform on everyday not knowing what they will face during their tour of duty adding that Albert he represents the many deputies who wear the uniform. They do it do every day for the protection of our citizens while making many contributions to the community to which we serve.

A prime example of Albert’s work is a recent incident in which he saved a man’s life that was suicidal. In July 2016, after being dispatched to a call of a distressed person attempting to jump from an overpass and onto the interstate, Albert exemplified true human compassion for the man. The Lieutenant spoke to the potential jumper not as a deputy but as fellow human, going so far as to tell him he could not let him jump because he loved him. While speaking and comforting the man, Albert was also very discreetly securing him so that he could not jump and very swiftly brought him back over the guardrail to safety. It is undeniable to say that the man would have lost his life that day if it would not have been for the Albert’s bravery and commitment to saving him; even though it very well meant risking his own life to save that of another. For that act of valor, Albert received the Sheriff’s Life Saving Award on October 12, 2016. The incident was also highly publicized as heroic not only by local media, but nationally. Yet, Albert remains humble and simply goes about his days doing the job he so loves.

Sheriff Leon Lott stated that he is proud of Lieutenant McLendon and is deserving of this award. The Sheriff added that Albert’s immense service and commitment to Richland County is a perfect example of the passion that the Richland County Sheriff’s Department applies to our community oriented policing strategy, which builds Unity in the Community and improves the quality of life for ALL citizens.
