Elderly woman robbed and assaulted

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced today the investigation into the armed robbery and severe assault and battery of a sixty-eight year old woman that occurred on July 31, 2008 at 2230 Decker Boulevard (the Bi Lo grocery store).

Sheriff Lott stated that at approximately 8:00 AM the victim was getting into her car when she was approached by a black male suspect who asked her a question and then started punching her in the face. The suspect then demanded the victim’s purse and then fled to a getaway vehicle driven by a second suspect - investigators have learned that the suspect, dressed in a red shirt and black pants, fled in a dark in color car.

Sheriff Lott stated that the defenseless elderly woman was beaten, sending her to the hospital with severe injury to her face and body. "This was a senseless act of violence, against a woman who would have handed her purse to the robber if given the opportunity." Sheriff Lott added that someone in the community knows who committed this horrific act and needs to do the right thing and turn the suspect in.

Security cameras recorded the assault and robbery – which is attached to this release.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has met with the victim and been able to produce a sketch of the suspect:

Anyone with information on the identity of the persons involved in the robbery and assault is asked to contact crimestoppers at 888-CRIME-SC www.sccrimestoppers.com.
