Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced the arrest of Kurt Hafner (DOB: 01/19/1981) for 24 counts of Ill Treatment to Animals; twenty three deceased reptiles and one deceased dog were found inside of Hafner’s residence on Meredith Square on April 10, 2017. Richland County Sheriff’s Department investigators took Hafner into custody on Wednesday, April 19, 2017.
Richland County Sheriff’s Department investigators were notified about numerous deceased animals inside of Hafner’s residence during an eviction on April 10, 2017. Investigators along with snake experts from All Things Wild were able to locate a deceased dog and numerous deceased reptiles: turtles, bearded dragons, lizards, and various snakes. Investigators discovered that Hafner had abandoned in his residence since February 2017 leaving the animals without food and water.
Sheriff Leon Lott states that as humans we abuse these poor animals that we get and then neglect, and if we are not going to love and care for them, then we don’t need to have them. The Sheriff further states that RCSD will take these cases seriously and prosecute those who abuse animals.
