Submission of Unsafe Firearms to Evidence

Occasionally, an officer will be in possession of a loaded (or presumed to be loaded) firearm that he/she cannot safely unload.

Please follow these procedures:

a)    NEVER attempt to unload a firearm that you are uncomfortable with or are unsure about.

b)    If this situation occurs after normal business hours, on weekends or holidays, contact the Evidence staff by phone to let them know that you will be placing a loaded/unsafe firearm in an evidence locker. The board in the Desk Sergeant’s area has the Evidence on-call contact information.

c)    Place a sign labeled “Unsafe Weapon Inside” on the outside of the locker to notify evidence personnel of the loaded firearm inside. These signs are now available in the evidence in-take area.

d)    Make sure to provide the necessary paperwork so that the firearm can be entered into ACISS (Incident and NCIC Reports). Complete the Evidence/Property Label and place the firearm in a gun box. Do not use a bag. Be sure to place the “Unsafe Weapon Inside” sign on the outside of the evidence locker.

e)    If you are presented with this situation during normal business hours, bring the weapon to HQ and Evidence personnel will contact a Firearms Examiner to render the firearm safe for submission.

Thank you for your cooperation.
 Major Stewart
